The right instrument can make a difference, and I have a variety to use, depending on the situation. Quite a few gigs call for 5-string electric bass now, and some bass parts cannot be played on a 4-string bass. Although I no longer play upright bass, I can emulate the sound of one closely by using a bass guitar that’s been properly set up and modeling software.
- 5-string fretted bass
- 4-string fretted bass
- 4-string fretted hollow-bodied bass
- 4-string fretless hollow-bodied bass
- 6-string classical guitar

Amplification & Effects
I have several amplifier/speaker setups, and I also have digital effects (for instance, for modeling an upright bass, or for special effects called for in certain scores). Sound techs can easily run a cable from my unit to use for the main house P.A. if needed.
